I found these two videos – in which Mike Winger explains ‘walking by the Spirit’ – very helpful. Maybe you will find them helpful too:

What I’m learning at the moment (quoted from the article on suffering that I’m writing):

In case you wondered why all the Christians you know aren’t perfect yet (oh…you noticed…), Galatians 5:16-17 and other passages point out that although the believer’s spirit has been renewed, the mind is still being renewed (Romans 12:2) but the body has not yet been renewed (Romans 8:23)… this is aside from the fact that there are many who claim to know Jesus who do not at all (Matthew 7:21, 23). Thankfully, for those who truly believe, after a while we can look back and see the genuine transformation that has occurred in our lives. And even more thankfully, we can trust that he will bring to completion the renewal of our minds and bodies (Phil 1:6, 1 Cor 15:52-53).

  • compare Matthew 26:34-35 with Matt 26:40-41 immediately afterwards. (Jesus tells us to pray “that we would not fall to temptation”, precisely because of the tug-of-war between the spirit and the flesh…note that the disciples did not pray, and then did give in to temptation, in this case a temptation based on fear and self-preservation. I guess I need to learn this myself!)
